This is the year when the previously Canterbury University College became the University of Canterbury. The pages 10 and 11 of the Calendar list the college academic staff in 1958 by departments. In the department of Philosophy (p.10), Professor is Arthur N. Prior, M.A. (NZ), appointed in 1952, J.M. Shorter M.A. (Oxon) is promoted to Senior Lecturer and as a new lecturer is appointed R. Ziedins M.A.(Melb.). The syllabus of courses in philosophy is given on pages 177-178.
