<text>The Calendar of the Canterbury University College for the year 1953. The pages 16 and 17 of the Calendar list the college academic staff in 1953 by departments. In the department of Philosophy, which in 1953 separated from Psychology and became a department in its own right, on p.17 there is only one name listed, Arthur N. Prior, M.A. (New Zealand) appointed as Professor of Philosophy in 1952. The position of Senior Lecturer is noted as empty and pending appointment. The syllabus of courses in philosophy is given on pages 79-80. Philosophy 1 included the topic of logic and scientific method, and among the required textbooks were Whitehead's Introduction to mathematics and Joseph's Introduction to logic. Philosophy II covered logic and ethics, and among the textbooks for logic was Bochenski's Precis de logique mathematique again, but also Bochenski's new book, Ancient formal logic. Philosophy III included the topic of history of philosophy, while the honours course included advanced logic, for which works by Frege we among the recommended reading, as well as the philosophy of nature, space and time etc., recommending for reading Ryle's Concept of mind. Novelty in the syllabus is the Philosophy for B.Sc., an introductory course in philosophy for science student, for which the recommended reading list included, for the first time, a paper from Lukasiewicz.</text>
