Title A name given to the resource Stanislaw Lesniewski [photograph] Description An account of the resource Stanisław Leśniewski (1886–1939) was a Polish logician who is regarded, together with Jan Łukasiewicz, as the founder of the Polish school of logic. He was the originator of an unorthodox system of the foundations of mathematics, based on three formal systems: Protothetic, a logic of propositions and their functions; Ontology: a logic of names and functors of arbitrary order; and Mereology, a general theory of part and whole. He lectured on logic and mathematics at the University of Warsaw from 1919 until his death in 1939, and was the supervisor of Alfred Tarski's doctoral dissertation. Arthur Prior was introduced to his logic system of Protothetic through the work of Bochenski and Łukasiewicz. Several of the papers that Prior wrote in the early 1950s are based on the analysis of Lesniewski's Protothetic. He taught mathematics at UC Berkeley from 1942 until his death in 1983. Bocheński (1902 – 1995), Polish catholic philosopher and logician, whose books on logic had profound influence on Arthur Prior. After the WWII, Bocheński taught history of the 20th century philosophy at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and published several books on logic and history of logic. Prior used Bochenski's A précis de logique mathématique (1948) and Ancient formal logic (1951) as textbooks for his logic classes and was inspired by his La logique de Théophraste (1947) to write his early paper on modal logic, "On propositions neither necessary nor impossible", published in The journal of symbolic logic in 1953. Bocheński send several letters to Prior in the early 1950s, informing him of the latest developments and forthcoming publications in modal logic. Meredith was a mathematician at the Trinity College Dublin and developed strong interest in formal logic under the influence of Jan Łukasiewicz, who taught in Dublin after the WWII. It was Łukasiewicz's suggestion to Meredith in 1952 to write to Prior in New Zealand, that started their productive collaboration and extensive correspondence. Norman himself was born in that house and continued to live there when in 1912 he married his first wife and Arthur's mother Bessie, who died after giving birth to Arthur in 1914. Norman remarried in 1923 with Jessie, who gave birth to Arthur's three half siblings Elaine, Ian and Owen. The house was pulled down in 2013.
