Description
The Calendar of the Canterbury University College for the year 1951. The pages 16 and 17 of the Calendar list the college academic staff in 1951 by departments. In the department of Philosophy (p.17), Professor of Philosophy is Ivan Sutherland, appointed in 1937, who in this particular year was on Refresher leave (sabbatical). Arthur N. Prior, M.A. is promoted to Senior Lecturer, teaching alongside A. Crowther (PhD from Cambridge) who was a Senior Lecturer (psychology) in the previous year. The syllabus of courses in philosophy is given on pages 77-79. Philosophy 1 included the topic of logic and scientific method, and among the required textbooks were Whitehead's Introduction to mathematics and Joseph's Introduction to logic. Philosophy II covered logic and ethics, and among the textbooks for the first time appeard Bochenski's Precis de logique mathematique. Philosophy III included the history of philosophy, while the honours course also included advanced logic, for which an additional reading was Broad's Examinations of McTaggart's philosophy. The section "Publications and researches, Philosophy and Psychology", on page 140, lists Prior's article "Categoricals and hypotheticals in Gorge Boole and his successors", published in The Australasian journal of philosophy.
