Canterbury University College Calendar, 1956

The Calendar of the Canterbury University College for the year 1956. The pages 20 and 21 of the Calendar list the college academic staff in 1956 by departments. In the department of Philosophy (p.21), departmental Professor Arthur N. Prior, M.A. (NZ), appointed in 1952, is on leave, and the lecturer is J.M. Shorter M.A. (Oxon). There is a junior lecturer appointed that year, J.C. Thornton, M.A.(NZ). The syllabus of courses in philosophy is given on pages 99-100. Philosophy 1 included the topic of logic and scientific method, and among the required textbooks were Whitehead's Introduction to mathematics and Joseph's Introduction to logic. Philosophy II covered logic and ethics, and among the textbooks for logic was again Bochenski's Precis de logique mathematique. Philosophy III included the topic of history of philosophy, while the honours course included advanced logic, for which works by Frege we among the recommended reading, as well as the philosophy of nature, space and time etc., recommending for reading Ryle's Concept of mind. The section "Publications and researches, Philosophy", on page 196, lists Prior's book Formal logic (Clarendon Press 1955) and eight articles that Prior published in 1954-55 (one together with Mary Prior): "Entities" (AJP, 1954), "On the interpretation of two systems of modal logic" (JCS 1954), "English and ontology" (British journal on the philosophy of science 1955), "Is necessary existence possible?" (Philosophy and phenomenological research 1955), "Diodoran modalities" (PQ 1955), "Many-valued and modal systems" (Philosophical Review 1955), the reprint of "Can religion be discussed" and together with Mary, "Erotetic logic" (Philosophical Review 1955).
