Description
The Calendar of the University of Canterbury for the year 1958. This is the year when the previously Canterbury University College became the University of Canterbury. The pages 10 and 11 of the Calendar list the college academic staff in 1958 by departments. In the department of Philosophy (p.10), Professor is Arthur N. Prior, M.A. (NZ), appointed in 1952, J.M. Shorter M.A. (Oxon) is promoted to Senior Lecturer and as a new lecturer is appointed R. Ziedins M.A.(Melb.). The syllabus of courses in philosophy is given on pages 177-178. Philosophy 1 included the topic of philosophy, logic and philosophy of science, and recommended reading list included Russell's Problems in philosophy, Prior's Formal logic and Popper's Logic of scientific discovery. Philosophy II covered logic, epistemology and introductory ethics, with Prior's Logic and the basis of ethics among the recommended reading. Philosophy III included the topic of history of philosophy and logic, for which Prior recommended his new book Time and modality. The reading list for Philosophy for B.Sc. included a paper from Tarski. The section "Publications and researches, Philosophy", on page 243, lists nine Prior's publications, among which is his 1957 book Time and modality.
